Five-day workshop on algorithmic composition, sound synthesis, and stochastic processes in SuperCollider

In this workshop, we’ll create systems with simplicity in mind, combining stochastic methods with deterministic (rule-based) approaches to generate notes, chords, rhythms, textures, and waveforms, including a flexible implementation of Iannis Xenakis’s Dynamic Stochastic Synthesis.

The emphasis is on code that can be modified while listening, allowing processes to be shaped and selected by ear in real time.

In this piece, for the first time I am combining the harmonic techniques I developed for my acoustic works with those I use to compose sounds on the computer: sounds created through extensions of Xenakis's stochastic synthesis, filtered to create chordal sequences in just intonation.

This chapter explores stochastic and deterministic algorithms as sources for non-standard sound synthesis and algorithmic composition–approaches like random walks, tendency masks, Xenakis's dynamic stochastic synthesis, bytebeats, and buffer manipulation.

Rather than modeling traditional acoustics, we focus on exploratory techniques that show how these methods—implemented in SuperCollider—can generate complex and richly structured sound worlds.

Workshop

In this workshop, we will explore various techniques for creating sounds and music without requiring prior knowledge of programming. We will combine deterministic procedures (rules) and stochastic procedures (processes whose evolution over time is random). The workshop will begin with an introduction to SuperCollider and will focus on its powerful pattern library. Patterns significantly simplify programming and will allow us to easily construct sound and musical structures using, for example, probabilistic distributions, tendency masks, random walks, and Markov chains.

Sound diffusion with Juan Carlos Blancas

La Légende d'Eer (1977) is one of Xenakis's most celebrated electroacoustic works, composed for the inauguration of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. Originally created in seven channels at the WDR studios in Cologne, the piece formed the musical component of "Le Diatope", a multimedia installation combining music, lasers, mirrors, and flashes of light.

I presented "The Music of Iannis Xenakis: Abstraction in Search of a Dionysian Knowledge of the Universe" as part of a panel discussion alongside architect Susana Moreno, who presented "The Architecture of Iannis Xenakis", moderated by architect Cristina Palmese. The event was part of a day dedicated to Xenakis's centenary, which included a continuous listening session of his electroacoustic works at the UAM's music laboratory.
